Walk to School is an event facilitated by Safe Routes Chattanooga a program of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Regional Planning Agency and is supported by Activate Chattanooga.  Safe Routes to School is a national initiative that aims to make everyday walk and bike to school day.  More children walking and biking means better health benefits for them and the environment, and reduced traffic congestion for everyone.  The Safe Routes Chattanooga program submitted applications totaling more than $400,000 worth of proposed improvements to the TDOT Safe Routes to School Grant program in March 2007.  Grant awards are expected to be announced in this month.  More information on TDOT’s grant program can be found at http://www.tdot.state.tn.us/bikeped/saferoutes.htm or for additional information on the national initiative visit www.saferoutesinfo.org .
