Special Bike2Work Event Nov. 2 to Celebrate
Chattanooga’s Renewed Status as Bike Friendly
Community
Chattanooga, TN
– Mayor Ron Littlefield will join Chattanooga’s bicycle
commuters for a special autumn Bike2Work on Friday, Nov. 2, from
7:00 – 8:30 a.m. at the downtown Development Resource Center
(DRC) at 1250 Market St. The event will continue Bike
Chattanooga’s successful monthly bicycle commuters’
breakfast and celebrate the city’s renewed status as a Bronze
Level Bicycle Friendly Community in 2007.
Bike2Work is a
monthly gathering to promote bicycle commuting in Chattanooga. It
is designed to connect experienced commuters with people wanting to
try biking to work for the first time. Organized rides come from
various neighborhoods into downtown, where participants are treated
to free coffee and breakfast.
“Because
Chattanooga’s bicycle commuters have been so enthusiastic
about Bike2Work, we decided to extend the event through the entire
year,” says Chattanooga Bicycle Coordinator Philip Pugliese.
“Beginning with the DRC, we’ll move the meeting
locations around the downtown area, to reach more downtown
workers.”
The Bike2Work
program is just one reason that the League of American Bicyclists
has awarded Chattanooga the Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community
distinction for the third time. The city won the status first in
2003 and again in 2005.
“Chattanooga
has made great strides toward improving our streets and making it
safer and more inviting for people to travel by bike,” said
Mayor Ron Littlefield. “Our award- winning Bicycle Master
Plan and Safe Routes to Schools are positive steps towards making
our air cleaner and our citizens healthier.”
Safe Routes
Chattanooga was recently awarded over $300,000 in federal grant
money for safety and infrastructure improvements around
Chattanooga/Hamilton County schools. It and other programs like
Bike2Work and monthly Street Smarts Bike Ed classes, as well as the
community’s continuing work on greenways and bicycle routes,
are reasons that the League of American Bicyclists continue to
award Chattanooga.
Bike2Work happens
the first Friday of every month, from 7:00 – 8:30 a.m. For
